How to Write Well in Consulting
Writing is an essential consulting skill. But it's not intuitive and full of unspoken expectations. That is why you struggle. Learn to write well and make it your superpower.
Once, I worked with a partner who was especially demanding about writing.
He would find grammar mistakes in my slides.
And then lecture me for hours on the importance of writing.
Consultants called him a Grammar-Nazi and didn't want to work with him.
The worst part was that
He used to rewrite my texts completely.
It was a gut-wrenching feeling.
I felt embarrassed and dumb.
It made me look like someone who couldn’t do my job well.
I hated that feeling. And I couldn't afford to damage my reputation any further.
Since then, I was determined to do everything possible to learn how to write well.
The thing is that it's not your fault you struggle.
Writing in consulting is not intuitive and full of unspoken expectations. We don’t speak and write like that in everyday life.
But it's a high-frequency activity.
You do it every day for months and years. Any friction will hold you back. The earlier you learn, the better your journey will be.
In fact, you can make it your superpower.
Imagine a world where people understand your ideas. They see you as a smart and creative thinker. You can persuade them to follow you. How amazing that would be!
This Writing Guide is created for consultants.
They often ask me how to improve their writing. For a long time, I couldn’t provide any reliable resources, so I decided to create one. I synthesized relevant principles and techniques and used examples to illustrate them.
