I asked my wife to speak in a top-down way. Big mistake...
Learn to communicate top-down: deliver your main message first, structure clearly, and impress partners with sharp, concise thinking.
I asked my wife to speak in a top-down way. Big mistake. Huge one. She looked at me angrily and said:
“I don’t work at McKinsey. I don’t have to do that.”
Fair point. I quickly learned not to bring this up again.
But here's the irony.
A year later, she also joined McKinsey and had to learn to communicate in a top-down way as well.
Now, whenever she complains to me that people ramble and don’t get to the point, I just smile and remind her of our conversation.
Jokes aside, top-down communication isn’t just nice to have. It’s a must-have skill in MBB consulting.
Partners don’t have time for unstructured thoughts. They get impatient. They switch off. And once that happens, it’s hard to regain their trust.
That’s why consultants must learn to communicate this way as early as possible.
Yes, it feels unnatural at first. But it’s 100% coachable.
