I hated Executive Summaries
Partners often ask consultants to write executive summaries. I hated them as a useless chore. But I didn't understand why they were important.
I hated Executive Summaries as a consultant.
But as an AP, I needed them so badly.
Initially, I thought it was a useless chore.
What’s the point of that? It felt awkward writing the same things all over again.
I simply didn't know how to do it well.
My problem was that I was more worried about producing a slide than communicating with clients effectively.
But it was the opposite for me as an AP.
I was more concerned about client impact than making slides.
I often needed only one page to discuss all key points, and I used an executive summary as a navigation map to determine clients’ interests and appetites.
Once I determine clients’ interests, I would dive deep into the most important topics, saving time and nerves by avoiding going through useless pages.
When I realized this, I started investing more time in writing compelling Executive Summaries.
If you want to write them well, here are three main rules:
1. Structure your documents.
Ideally, each point should be a deep dive or a section. This way, it’s easier for clients to understand the structure of your document.
2. Write in an insightful and impactful way
Support your points with numbers and facts. Write as concisely as possible. Minimum words, maximum impact.
3 Make them self-standing
Imagine you bring only that one page to a meeting. Make it your main output, and it better be really high quality.
If you invest in writing compelling executive summaries, you will notice that your thoughts become clearer and your communication more effective.
The consulting journey is complex and treacherous.
Walking it alone is extremely difficult. It’s helpful to have the support of someone who has experienced this journey and helped many others.
That is why I developed a coaching program for MBB consultants, which helps them achieve high performance and success.
