I want to make slides faster

Slow slide-making is a huge pain point for consultants. Typically, it takes many months to achieve high speed. But you want to learn it now. You don't have time. Let's explore how you can do that.

Six years ago, I had a long out-of-town project.

The weekends were quite boring, as I didn't know anyone there.

One day, I went to a practical shooting range. Practical shooting simulates dynamic combat situations where you must move and shoot, like John Wick in his movies.

Apparently, it's quite easy to hit targets from a stationary position. But it becomes extremely difficult once you add movement.

It's both physical and intellectual.

The instructor explained to me the importance of the right technique in shooting.

One of his phrases stuck with me.

Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.

First, you learn the right techniques by moving slowly. Then, you drill them until you achieve smoothness. Only then can you operate with high speed and accuracy.

And accuracy is an important factor here. Without accuracy, your high speed doesn’t make any sense.

That was a perfect concept!

I could see clear parallels with consulting work.

First, you must learn to produce high-quality (the equivalent of accuracy here) outputs. Only then can you work on improving your speed. There is little value in doing mediocre outputs faster.

But, many consultants chase speed without any regard for quality.

They often reduce slide-making only to design and formatting.

But it's a complex process where you must orchestrate multiple skills effectively, including the following ones:

• Accept tasks well to understand the problem and leadership expectations to avoid solving the wrong problems;

• Prioritize fiercely to avoid spreading yourself too thin and allocate enough time to critical content topics;

• Problem-solve thoroughly, ensuring you find the right solutions;

• Produce high-quality outputs to communicate your ideas.

Any flaws in this complex process will cause random mistakes, comments, and iterations, killing your productivity and damaging your reputation.
