"I worked so hard to get into BCG. But I was fired after 18 months..." a BCG consultant shared
Getting into MBB consulting is a significant achievement. It can propel one's career to unimaginable heights. But it's also a highly competitive environment where success is far from guaranteed.
"I worked so hard to get into BCG. That was an amazing opportunity to boost my career. But then, I was fired after 18 months."
That was a real conversation with a former BCG consultant.
Here's what he told me.
"I had a big plan. I wanted to make a radical career change. That is why I completed my MBA and then joined BCG.
I was so excited. I thought I would crush it. But I was naive. Hahaha! It didn’t work out exactly how I imagined.
My first project was absolutely terrible. We worked 14-16 hours every day for 2 months…often on weekends too. I was so overwhelmed, and my manager was always unhappy with me.
That bad project impacted my staffing. I struggled to find new projects. That’s how I got behind in my development.
Eventually, I was put on a PIP (performance improvement plan). I worked really hard to survive. At times, it felt like I was going to make it. But in the end, I didn’t.
My biggest regret? To be honest, I never had good coaching and mentorship. My managers were always busy with their own survival. I couldn't learn as much as I wanted.
Another big regret was leaving the firm not on my own terms. It affected my mental health. I am still processing it.
I believe I would’ve been a great PL. Unfortunately, I was not given a proper chance to prove it.
And your coaching program arrived too late for me."
